  SNIFL Openings
Posted by: dthacker - 04-13-2011, 12:30 AM - Forum: News & Announcements - No Replies

Here's a thumbnail on several of the SNIFL teams with open manager positions

Division 4
Big Belly United
BBU has a solid starting eleven and healthy cash balance to purchase additional talent. The Bellies are being run by a caretaker who is doing a fine job of managing stamina and development of the roster. They currently sit fourth in the table a third of the way through the season and could possibly end up in promotion playoffs. Biggest Challenge: Replacing a stellar goalkeeper who is eligible for retirement at the end of the season.

Division 3
Southend Town
SOU has been a bit neglected before a caretaker took over this season. The club will need a lot of wheeling and dealing to replace an aging roster. The caretaker is working to aggressively bring in new talent and there is plenty of cash to make new deals. Southend currently has 3 under 19 players racking up minutes and experience in the Reserve Leauge. Biggest challenge: Staying out of the relegation zone until the new talent arrives.

Austrailian Grecians
The Grecians are just a few pieces away from being a real Div 3 contender. There's some weakness at keeper, but the defenders and mids are solid. The bank balance is very healthy, so picking up transfers and draft choices are possible.

More next week!

Mark Perry, the legendary manager of Hauboken SV, has announced his resignation at the end of the season. HSV has held down the top spot in Division 1 for several seasons now, and several managers are expected to apply for the vacancy.

  Game code changes - proposal
Posted by: prozenfeld - 04-12-2011, 01:35 PM - Forum: Far Horizons: The Awakening - Replies (23)

Based on previous experience with Far Horizons, I would propose the following (simple) changes to the game engine code:

1) Make sure no planet in the home system has LSN lower than 15. Try to achieve that by adjusting the atmospheric requirements (instead of Temperature/ Pressure), so that your planets may remain highly attractive to other species - adds another motivation for interspecies interaction.

REASONING: Having a habitable planet in a home system gives the player an unfair advantage.

2) Increase jump difficulty over longer distances. My proposals include:
- change mishap formula to use distance^3 instead of distance^2
- limit FS (Fail-Safe Jump Unit) usage to one per jump

You may consider offsetting these changes by increasing the number of wormholes in galaxy and/or lowering the minimal wormhole distance requirement.

REASONING: In the midgame, with GV >> 20, whole galaxy becomes reachable without issues, making surprise all-out attack the most effective (but boring) conflict solution. The above changes will not rule that strategy out, but will require more planning and increase logistics difficulty.

We had discussed a few more advanced changes, but in this thread I decided to focus on those which are easily implementable.

Comments / questions are appreciated.

My aunt passed away, last night, so it will likely be a slow day or two, on my end, where this site is concerned. Feel free to post at your leisure, or just browse what's already in the forum, here.

Hi,
Started playing PBM games in 1980 or 81 when I picked up a copy of Space Gamer Magazine and saw some ads. I tried Beyond the Stellar Empire and I think a Flying Buffalo game before I settled on Universe II by Clemens and Associates. Through that I met a guy who was halfway across the country and has been a great friend ever since. We played U II as allies for years and got into two other Clemens games Celetrek II and Terra II (turns input on punchcards!) Oh the memories! Oh the stress when waiting for a turn and the postman stopped up the street to have beers for lunch with the retired postmaster!!!
I have to admit to spending a stoopid amount of money on a Terra II manual just last week off e-bay but I've been looking for one for decades.

Glad I found this site!!!

Bonus: I used to travel down to The Complete Stratigest in NYC to get Space Gamer and the guy who played Wyatt in the movie Weird Science worked there... that was weird.

  Virtua-Libs
Posted by: JonO - 04-07-2011, 07:52 PM - Forum: Rimworlds - Replies (4)

Based on a conversation Ram and I had here, I've written up the description of a new piece of equipment for starships and starbases. Right now its being looked at by my brain-trust.

Libraries
Entertainment for your ship or base's crew is not a luxury but a necessity. Purchasing a virtua-lib provides a morale boost every turn. A virtua-lib is essentially an oversized suit that completely encases a crewmember and feeds recorded images and sounds to his brain while manipulating hydraulic pressure pads to give him the physical sensations to match what the images are showing him. A single library is considered sufficient for 20 crew. Multiple (20 qbic) libraries may be installed in the crew quarters of any ship or base.

Discs
New programming for your virtual libraries is something that provides an additional morale boost, but only for thirty earth-days. After that it is considered simply one of the resources available to the library, not a bonus. All libraries aboard have access to all discs, and there is no limit to the number of disks that may be installed, since they have no qbicage.

Discs are often available on Factor Alley. There are three types. From lowest to highest priced, they are:

Classical, which is usually a simulation of attending an event like a symphony, boxing match, or Tri-D movie.

Training, which is a simulation of a situation that is likely to occur aboard a ship or a base.

Adventure, simulations of highly exciting, sometimes erotic, and deeply satisfying episodes that have been created to provide your crew with a chance to experience worlds, real and imaged

Unlike any other equipment in Rimworlds™, there is an earthly cost associated with the purchase of these discs. However, their installation (like all equipment, they are stored in the cargo hold until installed or transferred to another ship) also reduces the next monthly subscription charge by the amount already charged. Discs, in other words, function both as morale boosters within the game and as gift cards that may be used, traded, sold or given away as the player sees fit.

Classical Discs usually sell for cr$ 5,000 and cost $1.00

Training Discs usually sell for cr$ 20,000 and cost $1.50

Adventure Discs usually sell for cr$ 50,000 and cost $3.95

Psaico Note: Although discs are a meta-object, they are also standard equipment within the game. Which means that, under certain circumstances they can be destroyed or liberated by a boarding party. If you are concerned about this possibility, we strongly urge you not to carry discs in your hold, but to install them as soon as you receive them.

Norberg Games
Despite a recent announcement on the Fate of a Nation forum that Fate of a Nation didn't make it, the game continues onward. The Top list for winter year 2 (turn 34) has been posted by Peter of Norberg Games.

-----

PlayByMail.Net
I heard from Gary Smith, formerly of Andon Games fame, via e-mail recently, after I sent him a link to the interview that PlayByMail.Net did with Rich Van Ollefen. Gary said that the interview was "an interesting read."

-----

Rolling Thunder Games
Browing the threads of the Rolling Thunder forum, I came across a discussion thread for SuperNova: Rise of the Empire that pertained to things that are slowing down the database, and by extension, the delivery of turn results to the players.

-----
Agema
We're a full week into the month of April, and the Agema forum remains very quiet. Turn results for Turn # 8 for one of Agema's games is out, today, however.

-----

Project Libertine
The Project Libertine Development Blog continues to see Hatch post regular updates, on his upcoming 4X Space Exploration browser game. Unable to sleep, Hatch went ahead and finished implementing code for Ship Morale decay.

-----

Empyrean Cluster Wars
Exploring the Empyrean Cluster wars forum, I noticed that site user Darth Pedro has declared that the starship ship DPS DDT successfully vaporized a Borg intruder.

-----

Rimworlds
Rimworlds is going to be an on-line multiplayer space civilization simulation. Jon Ogden, programmer and overseer of the Rimworlds project, has issued an invitation for testers, over in the Rimworlds forum. Jon also recently released an image of a new 3D model of a ship to be used in the game of Rimworlds.

-----

Flying Buffalo
Dropping by the Flying Buffalo Gamer Forums, I noticed a small sparkle of exchange between players of the game, Starweb, in an otherwise largely lifeless forum.

-----

Reality Simulations
Turn orders for Hyborian War game number HW-854 have begun arriving in players' postal mailboxes. My turn results for the kingdom of Nemedia arrived in my mailbox, this morning. That's how I know. As of the end of turn # 11, the top ten ranked kingdoms in HW-854 are:

1st - Tombalku
2nd - Zembabwei
3rd - Amazonia
4th - Uttara Kuru
5th - Zamora
6th - Khoraja
7th - Cimmeria
8th - Juma's Kingdom
9th - The Border Kingdom
10th - Kosala
