Just submitted my first turn for this game! I am Barth, a scurrilous cynic, finding his way in a strange city.
Seems like everyone starts as a prisoner, remembering little from prior life, released unexpectedly in the main town of a remote colony, surrounded by dangers. You design a character with some simple attributes, get a nice write-up of your starting situation, and then submit a narrative set of thoughts and actions to take. I added a number of conditional actions, depending on the results of earlier actions. "I go down the alley -- if someone is there, do this. If it's empty, do that. If I get to a main street, do this other thing."
The writing is excellent, not too long or full of needless fluff, and directly engaging.
I'll use this thread to post more about Barth's misadventures, keeping certain details secret as needed.

suggestion - revisit fora names and layout |

Just a suggestion -- much of the top of the forum page is taken up by administrative stuff, like "website related" and "pbm wiki" and "submit your ideas". Might want to reshuffle things to put the most interesting bits at the top.
- move the S&D or PBM Games uber-forums to the top, and move PlayByMail.net down
- break out the Games sub-fora into categories, for easier sorting and to help people find what they're looking for, like "open-ended games, close-ended games, RPGs, etc" or "space-themed, fantasy-themed, etc" or "steady classics, new and hot, inactive, etc"
- Games Seeking Players appears to not need a sub-forum - no need for an extra click

Middle-earth Games runs turn-based, strategy games set in the world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, including elements from ICE’s Middle-earth Role Playing. Play as either the Free Peoples or the Dark Servants, and work together with your team-mates to take control of the lands of Middle-earth. Earn your victory through a combination of martial strength, magical prowess, and economic power.

Prosperous Universe |

Occasionally I will stumble upon a web-based game that reminds me of a PBM. Take a look at Prosperous Universe. It's a space economics game. After you get everything setup and running, including the customization of the user interface itself, you log in 5-10 minutes a day to manage things. The game moves slowly (which I love), so don't expect immense wealth and power to come swiftly.
It's under active development now, and many new features are being added. It has one of the best user interfaces for a web game I have ever seen and allows full layout customization.

Example Turns on PBM Wiki |

Hi everyone,
One of the things I am hoping to do is collect sample turns for all active PBMs to place on the PBM Wiki. Virtually no PBM companies still in existence offer sample turns on their own websites, which I find unusual, since evaluating turn results is one of the best ways to get a feel for the game itself.
Any thoughts on this? It will require multiple people to take this effort on, so I can't do it alone.

board game opponents? |

Anyone interested in a little board game action, online? I do think this falls under the realm of turn-based gaming, even if it is just a port from the tabletop. The main plus is that we can finish a game in a matter of a day, a week, a month tops.
I like a site -- www.yucata.de -- that is simple, free, and not too heavy on the browser. I think "Macao", "Terra Mystica", "Navegador" or "Russian Railroads" would be appealing to most PBMers. I have a particular fondness for "A Few Acres of Snow", which depicts the French v. English conflicts in colonial territories, but it's only 2-player.
If anyone is interested, I can help ramp you up on rules, or we can pick any other game on the site. Sadly they don't have one of my favorites -- Tzolkin -- but that's available on Board Game Arena.
I will do a full write-up of any games played, for everyone's amusement.
