  Company Commander, the war beckons...
Posted by: tstone - 03-04-2012, 06:11 AM - Forum: Games - Replies (2)

The original Company Commander was definitely a game that appealed to the inner Rambo that existed in all of us 80s kids with a yen for military adventure. Now, close to three decades later and having actually experienced some military adventures for real, I find myself drifting back to this human moderated wargame with roleplaying elements.

It's interesting in this post Cold War multi-polar world, with the rise of commercial security/mercenary outfits and large areas experiencing political instability, that this game dealing with soldiers of fortune seeking to conquer/stabilize terriitory in such a region would have more precience now than it did then.

This version of the game comes with color maps detailing the geography of the territory on different levels. Also, you have a thorough rulebook, and the weapons catalogue which starts out at a considerably lower tech level than the previous game (no M1 Abrams in here, that probably can come later).

So...Colonel Tiberius Abrams surveys this land, this land of blood, tears and possibilities.

Twin Engine Gaming, Werner Freitas and Out Time Days
Posted by: tstone - 03-04-2012, 05:49 AM - Forum: Opinions & General Discussion - Replies (2)

Out Time Days, in which you play a Time Traveler on an alien world, was an amazing epic run by Werner Freitas out of San Diego, CA. He also ran the very excellent Space Combat and the notable Death By Starlight.

Anyone know what became of his outfit? Would play OTC or SC again in a heartbeat.

One for Company Commander (Jason Oates is still alive and kicking)

And a set-up request for Crack of Doom 2

Hi folks! Who might want old PBM mags?
Posted by: RedKnight - 02-25-2012, 03:31 PM - Forum: New to the site? Introduce Yourself - Replies (5)

Hi folks, how's it going?

I was huge into Galactic Prisoners (I was HT Rex) and other games back in the days....

I'm cleaning out my garage and came across a box of old PBM magazines. It's perhaps 50 Paper Mayhems, about 20 Flagships, and a few Avalon-Hill Generals. They're not in the best condition, and I'll want to keep a few that I wrote reviews in... but otherwise, I hate to just chuck'em all.

Is it possible anyone might want these?

I can't seem to find Paper Mayhem off the bat, in a google... is it still alive?

And I noticed how Flagship appears to have started a digital archive - but Carol Mulholland is now ill. How sad!

Any ideas concerning the disposition of these mags is welcomed.

Thanks!

Mike

God, its been ages since I've even thought about PBMs... but they were a great diversion as our group's interest in D&D faded over the years.

I was a big fan of The Kings of Steel and Saturnalia (?), don't suppose anyone has the Kings of Steel map or Rule book to hand - its was a simple yet satisfying game that may translate well to a simple turn based game/app... Wink

Keep the spirit alive!
