I know that we have registered site users that hail from a variety of different places throughout the world. Out of curiosity, where do each of you hail from, currently, for those of you that don't mind revealing such.
Cape Town, South Africa. Was born here, but lived in the UK (Bude, Cornwall) from the ages of about 7 to 27. Been back in Cape Town now for over 12 years.
Currently South Korea and will be here for the next few years. After that, if I have my way, my last several years in the Army will be spent in Germany, then Fort Lewis...
I am currently in Illinois. I was the owner of Triad Simulations in the 1980s of which I had my flagship game, Triad and my following PBM called Real Politik.

Presently in Gurnee Illinois, USA.
Been all over the world: Korea, Philipenes, Japan, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, Spain, France, England, Denmark, Benelux, Switzerland, Egypt, Somalia, Saudi, Kuwait, Bahrain... and of course all over the states.
Where is Gurnee? Sounds like the southern part of the state. Of course, when I was growing up in Elmhurst (west of Chicago) I was told that Peoria was Southern Illinois. Go figure.
Originally I'm from Kenosha WI, but now live in Aurora, IL. I was a co-founder of Genesis Games Design. I would like to add to the content of Wiki if I may. We had two other games beside Cosmic Crusaders. They were Node Warriors and Salvage Wars. I also have copies of our rules books and I have several play my mail magazines from the time period when we were alive and kicking.
SuperNova, TribeNet, and A New Dawn are are all open-ended, civilization building type games. Middle-earth is team-based and has victory conditions. Most games of Middle-earth end in 20-30 turns.
All four of the games listed above have the traditional two-week turnaround schedule.

Hi Mark - I sent you a private message. I am just up the road from you in Portland, Oregon. It would be great to connect.

Hello, everyone! My name is Raven Zachary and I live in Portland, Oregon, USA. I was born and raised in a small town in Iowa.

Hey sir, just a question for you.
I was looking over the SuperNova site, but I wasn't sure it was worth it, $10.00 setup, and $6.00 every turn (every 2 weeks). You play it, so I would guess you think its worth it, but I was wondering what you would say to someone on the fence? What makes it worth the money?
Thanks!

Hi there. I love the game, but it's not for everyone. It's a lot of data, and I have a bunch of spreadsheets to track planets, fleets, technology, colonies, etc. To get a flavor of what the game is like, check out the Player Aid and the Wiki I created for SuperNova:
Southern New Jersey! USA.
Yes and I am actually within Southern NJ, not Philly!
Long live Midgard, and it's many versions. It is standing up once again under Davin Church with it's on forum here and now. Always looking for a few players to join the game or rejoin from the past.
Earthwood was more of a wargame PBM game. Started off with either a starting castle or as a wandering tribe. You could then try and take over castles or ally with NPC armies.
Very hazy as it was a long time ago. Wish some-one still had some maps or the names of the races. I seem to remember there was "The Necromancer" and "The Sorcerer" were two of the wandering tribes.
Hi! I'm Mike. Originally from Iowa; currently in the suburbs of Denver.
I haven't played any PBM games yet. Long, long history of RPGs and turn-based games like Star Fleet Battles. I stumbled across a mention of Empyrean Challenge while doing some research on naval table-top games and it just hooked into my imagination somehow. I'm interested in space/interstellar games. I've seen a bit on here about SuperNova and some others.
I run a game called Galac-Tac that's a space-oriented game, but it might not be the style you're looking for. It's a 4X type of game with limited players and a limited time span to win or lose.
There are some PBM games still around that take place in space, but remember that PBM games typically have long gaps of time between turns - they don't run one turn immediately after another like you might be used to with other styles of games.

Also, if you’re up for a competitive one on one, we could take Davin’s Galactac out for a spin and stream updates to this forum...

Sure - you can play with only two players, but that will leave lots of territory open and it will be some time before you bump into each other. OTOH, that gives you both time to learn all the ins and outs of economic expansion without having to worry about military matters for a while.
Or, you may like to recruit a couple of other players that are having fun in currently-running games and see if they want to play an "open" game with you at the same time.
I’m up for that! My goal - do an open game with cheesy-humorous role play banter on this forum, like we once did with Far Horizons (which ranks among my favorite PBM game experiences.)
If you'd like to set one up, use the web site to ask for a game with plenty of players so that anyone can sign up that wants to play. I can cause it to start whenever we think that everyone's joined that wants to. (And of course, I'm still providing a couple of years of free play time for those that don't have it, simply for the asking.)
You'll want to choose how often the turns run, probably once a week or once every other week. Since it would be an open and frivolous game, missing a weekly turn occasionally isn't going to be too annoying. (You could even play faster, but not everybody has enough free time to spend on a fast game.)

How did you come across mention of Empyrean Challenge???
[/quote]
Serendipity? A couple months back I was reading the Heart of Oak rulebook (Fantasy Games Unlimited) when I saw that Hyborian(?) War was a featured article on the Wikipedia. That piqued my interest about PBM. Not very much later I saw the EC rulebook for sale on a gamesite. I thought "why not?" The design of the game appealed to me right off. I saw PlayByMail on Facebook (their ability to connect the dots is spooky sometimes) and here I am.

I was looking at that last night. The player's aid seemed to be a Windows executable; I'm mostly a Mac guy. I didn't dive too deeply into it after that. Is each turn something one could take care of in a single afternoon?

The GTac Assistant is for Windows, but it runs fine on Crossover for the Mac, if you have that. But the GTac Assistant is not necessary for play - it can all be done on the screen or with paper and pencil. The GTac Assistant just makes it more fun and graphical.
Turns can take anywhere from a half-hour to numerous hours spread out over several days, depending on how deep and detailed you wish to get. Usually an afternoon is enough to play quite reasonably.
I myself shy away from local client installations. You can submit all orders through the web site. Also, the site provides “suggested orders” for the first few turns - this demos the order framework and ramps you up quick. I haven’t run a big position yet, but I imagine 2 possibilities when running a big position:
- use sentries, patrols, supply runs, etc to lighten the load
- gorge upon the minutiae

Cool. I just created an account over at talisman-games.com. Y'all even had `ronin` available!
Commands such as SHUTTLE are provided and necessary to keep your economics and other boring stuff running in the background so you can concentrate on the fun stuff and conquer the galaxy more enjoyably.
FYI - The GTac Assistant comes as an installer for convenience, but it really is no more than copying files to a directory. If your complaints simply have to do with what the installer is doing to your system, I'd be happy to help you with a zero-interference setup.

Okay let’s do this. Anyone else want to join in? I’ll finish my reread of the rules and try some stuff on my solo sandbox between now and then.
And I’ll work up a character, for role playing it. (Heh heh)

You may set up your own game parameters on the web site and let anyone join who wants to. If you're expecting only a few players, there will be fewer stars and they'll be further apart, so you ships will need more star drives than in a standard game. Or, you may ask to have extra stars so the galaxy is a bit denser, but then your economies will end up generating lots of extra spending cash before you bump into one another so you'll each have plenty of warships to make the combats bloodier without so much contention for resources.

FYI - one of the more memorable races from the old days of Galac-Tac was a humanoid race descended from large felines. Once, the captain got his tail caught in the automatic sliding doors that closed too soon. The next turn he had a new chief engineer and the old one was seriously regretting his maintenance policies, day after day.

Why don't you open up a new thread over in the Galac-Tac subforum to provide a place for your challenges, threats, and discussions?
How are we doing this? New game start? What needs to happen? Can we shrink down the galaxy size for a 2-player game? Or do we want a mega-slugfest with 2 giant empires? I can go either way - I just want to start!

You get to create your own game, setting the parameters however you like. The size of the galaxy doesn't change, but the number of stars in it will be reduced to better accommodate the number of players. Of course, that means the stars will be further apart unless you ask for a denser galaxy than normal (which gives you more total stars).
Don't forget to set the time between turns that you can both agree on.
I have created Galaxy 122 - I don't see it as a new signup option on this page, perhaps because I am already signed up for it.
Davin - can you confirm that it is there and open to all players? Should players register before seeing an option for joining a game? I see some other game starts pending up there - are they all "active and waiting for live players"? Or have some of them expired? I set game 122 for 2-15 players - how do we "start" it? I'd like to get at least the 3 who've spoken up about it (ronin, Talisman, and myself) before it activates.
And Talisman - we are starting threads on the Galactac forum for some role-playing fun and technical exposition on the game itself. Feel free to join us.
If any others wish to join this open game, the window of opportunity is rapidly closing...
Yes, galaxy #122 is out there and available to anyone (except those already signed up for it).
The other galaxies you see out there are open and available for sign-ups by anyone (including those already playing in other galaxies). Some are very old and a few are fairly recent. Anyone may create additional proposed galaxies to add to this list and see if enough people will sign up for it.
Yes, players will need to have an account with us before signing up. If you do not, go through the usual player sign-up procedure (without sending in a payment) and let me know to credit your account for play. Then you'll be able to join this galaxy.
The galaxy will start automatically when the max players are reached, or I can force it to start when you think everyone has joined up that's going to.
Yes, I was going to ask if anyone had a preference of due date, especially considering that the turn speed has been set to once a week. I have the other current games due on a Sunday night and process on a Monday morning.
BTW, just because a turn is due on a particular day doesn't mean you have to wait until the last minute to get it in. Some players get their turn done immediately after their report comes out, or on whatever day is convenient for their schedule.
I may have bit off more than I can chew. I have joined Riftlords, Heroic Fantasy, Dungeonworld: Broken Lands, and It's a Crime. I am waiting for a game of Nuclear Destruction to start but I think that one may take a while.
I've got to stop looking at other games. I get tempted. I dropped out of Phoenix: Beyond the Stellar Empire cause its just too huge and I have too many games. Same with Atlantis: New Origins. I played 6 or so turns of both. Very good games.
