Space Debris: In-game happenings in Takamo (Player Discussion)

Since Ixnay is too busy trying to get his fledgling trade corporation off the ground in this one, I'll initiate this discussion thread.

OK, so I sign up for this free game of the original version of Takamo, and here I was, trying to figure out how to submit a set of turn orders for my very first turn in this game that I have never played before (despite the fact that I remember seeing ads for this game in old PBM magazine sway back when.

Fortunately for me, game creator Randy Ritnour came to the rescue, answering a few questions and otherwise tolerating my insane attempt to join this game without reading the rulebook all of the way through. Ahem...I did skim the rules, so that should be worth something, shouldn't it?

So, not having any real clue as to what I was actually doing, I submitted a set of turn orders, and in due time, my turn results for that first turn arrivedin my e-mail in-box.

Thus, begins this discussion thread. Submit to it, as you see fit, as you dare.

Think that you're safe in this game, just because it's your first turn?

Try telling that to my first set of turn results. Here are a few lines from my Turn # 1's results:

Danger Danger Probe detects fighters are attacking. . . ...

Danger Danger Fort(s) are fir.....
Defense control reports destruction of enemy probe.

WARNING WARNING fleet is in danger of being destroyed!

Suddenly, the galaxy is looking mighty small.

#3062

Yep. Don't make the mistake of thinking that because that planet on your initial setup LOOKS empty... or your explorers will get their heads handed to them at least part of the time.

I highly recommend using the Planetary Probes the first turn or two - they are cheap (30 RUs each) and expendable anyway. This way you can find out where the nasty aliens are without scratching the new paint job.

You DO want to have some exploring fleets, but remember to set your fleet's aggression level as low as it will go. Also pick a fleet maneuver.

#3070

my first turn I built 5 explorers and lost all 5 to black holes
my second turn i built 5 more and lost them to planets
i was like never mind I will just send planetary probes but the tec raise helped in that respect

Very rough start in the first 3 turns. I thought it was going to be a rough start but I am progressing ok now...at least I think so

I wasn't suggesting you were. Now, me, on the other manipulative tendril...
;)

The rationale for picking a maneuver order is that NOT having one universally sucks, compared to a fleet that DOES have one.

I have got to find that box of stuff that has all of my old papers in it, I seem to recall seeing an (admittedly incomplete) comparison chart of the 9 different combat maneuvers vs each other.

good advice, however, that wont help you find black holes..or your ships that enter them

So did people get their turns back okay? Any questions?

No turn result, here.

#3102

I don't understand. Did you submit a turn before 1900 CDT Friday? Did you get anything back? I have so far gotten my turns back around midnight Friday/Saturday. Even if you have not submitted an action turn, I was under the impression you should still get info back with a turn's worth of income.

We are getting randomly blocked by the spam filter on your gmail. They designate the e-mails as "high probability of spam".

I just sent it again. Let me know if you got it.

Except that I don't use any spam filter on that account.

I checked my e-mail, again, just now, and the turn results are there.

Or, perhaps I should say, that some set of turn results are there. It doesn't seem to be results for what relatively little that I actually tried to order. Maybe it tried to process my firs set of turn orders, again. Not sure. I don't recall ordering any exploration or ship movement. I only tried to issue 11 actual orders out of a possible 50.

#3106

Did you get 2nd attempt?

Nice to know that others share in misfortune, when it comes to turn results.

This Ap Bac
Grand Magister of the Apshain Federation.

We are a Ag Corp from the original galaxy of takamo. I don't know if we were the largest or most powerful to ever exist but we were close to the top of the list. I just signed up yesterday (13 april) and am still waiting to hear back with my starting setup. When I get it I'm going to be looking for clients.

One of the things I'll be doing is scanning worlds, looking for planets to occupy. If you know anything about Ag and Trade corps, we can't occupy them ourselves, but we van find them for others who can. I will be willing to trade planetary locations to other players for development for a random planet terraformed for me once in a while. the exact number we can work out to our benefit somewhere along the line. Of course, I also just happen to have Ag centers to drop on your planets. Trust me you want those badly, they are very useful.

I also need to find a trade corp to trade favors with.

From a cursory reading of the forums I'm finding that the galaxy is full of dangerous junk that just did not exist before. there were very little problems in the old galaxies. this one people are getting into shooting matches and other odditie problems (black holes) instintaniously. Never used to happen. Does not bode well for the future. I don't think we need to shoot at each other in this game, there will be too much else too shoot at already.

Pleasure doing business with you in the future...

Depends. Maybe we can have a "pet" Cyber.

We'll talk.

Speaking of which - anyone considered playing a smuggler or pirate? I've found it's helpful to have an 'arrangement' with a smuggler, so they can put a smuggling center on your worlds - that way, nobody else can.

I noticed that the powers that be at Takamo have decided to gift us all with a TEC 29, 31 TON DREADNAUGHT today. That's like giving children crayons and playdoh in your house.
WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY THINKING!

BTW, do we get to assign them to a fleet and use them this turn? No particular reason, just asking.........

#3386

Well, for those who are not sure they can handle such ships, I will gladly take them off of their hands...

#3387

That's what is worrying me. People who want to 'handle' them!

#3388

*
Anyone want to buy one? "You can have any colour as long as it's black."*

Send me a PM.

* paraphrase from Henry Ford

#3393

Well I gotta say, after 20 years away from this game it has sucked me back in. Soelien-Twa Mining Corp back in business (from Baxel Galaxy)

This is amazing!!! I have yet to loose a single scout!! of course I have had probe after probe shot by forts and fighter and...well you get the picture! and I'm on turn 7 and working my 4th sector. Well it won't last forever. Every time you use a probe it is expended, no matter what happens, always use probes no matter what if you can. 30 RUs is nothing compared to the price of a scout. Use it!

Tech level raises never hurt either, use them as well.

It's just good ol' Teddy all over again with gun boat diplomacy.

"Walk softly and carry a Big Stick."

Did us a lot of good back in 1898. do ME a lot of good NOW.

You don't need it TOO USE. Just have it ready...

Ive lost plenty to blackholes in fact fl 2 a scout has been rebuilt one turn lost in the same turn and rebuilt again only to be lost the same turn...Ive been thinking of retiring fl 2 due to the jinx factor...lol
