Call for submissions!

Every undertaking, each and every last endeavor, has a starting point. Every magazine has an origin. Every issue has both a first word and a final word. Cover to cover, these text cities come alive, populated by the words - by the thoughts typed aloud - of individuals such as yourself.

It is said that content is king. In that case, what we seek are the crown jewels of your expressive abilities. Our aim is to start a magazine from scratch, to craft it from pieces of our respective minds on a common subject - turn-based gaming.

I hail from the era of play by mail gaming, from a time when games were played by post, via the postal service. Perhaps you do not. Regardless, we are bound together by a common tie - the tie that binds. Namely, we share a love, a passion, a craving for gaming of the turn based variety.

In years past, various PBM magazines came into existence, forged from a combination of purpose and hope. That hour dawns again!

Destiny calls. Fate beckons. I beseech your consideration.

Its price will be free. Its audience must be grown. We start from scratch.

Are you game?

This is a call for submissions for articles, for reviews, for substantive pieces on the subject of turn-based gaming.

Your perspectives, your experiences, your opinions. That's what we're after.

That's what we want to showcase.

It's what we want to share with the world, with others out there who share our taste and our affinity and our preference for the very best that turn-based gaming has to offer.

We want YOU to write it. We want to compile it. We want to publish it.

If YOU believe there to be merit in it. If YOU believe that YOU have something of value to say on this subject - then won't you join US?

We reserve the right to reject any submission. That's not to say, however, that we don't want you to submit. Nothing could be further from the truth, in fact.

We're not Paper Mayhem. We're not Flagship.

We're something new.

Help us get there. Help us to make it happen.

Thank you for your time, and for your interest, which we hope is great!

Submissions of art or written material for consideration for inclusion into the pages of this new magazine may be made to:

This is brilliant, Grimfinger.

Turn-based gaming is a good name, as it includes solo gaming: Donald Featherstone "Solo Wargaming", started it all did it not (published in 1972)? There is also Lone Warrior, now both a blog and the journal. I have a copy of the original paper I submitted to Lone Warrior called "Nuked", that won a prize as "article of the year".

#2531

Good luck with this project Grim.

I'm not sure what I might be able to contribute in terms of articles. I don't actually play any PBM/TBG games as such anymore and I write pretty slowly so would find it hard to commit to a monthly turnaround.

Are you thinking of creating any sort of listings though? Thats an area I think I could probably help out with more profitably.

What you're doing with your contributions to the PBM Wiki, by fleshing the wiki out and growing it with details, is of incalculable value. It truly is.

As far as articles for the magazine goes, don't think in terms of committing to a monthly turnaround. Just submit, when you can, and I can insert it into the next issue that follows. Fair enough? One can contribute intermittently, not just each issue.

I appreciate that, Greybeard.

Are you wanting to submit that article that you wrote long ago, or are you wanting to author a new article?

#2539

Grimfinger, I will begin to retype the original on modern paper size and send it to you asap.

By the way, there are still a lot of solo gamers about. See: http://solowargamer.wordpress.com and also "the wargaming addict on playing a war-game with no opponent".

I always found that the best/most enjoyable articles in Flagship were the ongoing ones, like the game play diaries, whether individual or by a group of players. They seemed to give much more insight into how a game played and developed as opposed to a more standard review where the reviewer may have only seen a relatively small part of the game. That is the sort of article I would like to write but we will see.

Continuity and anticipation (some great benefits of TBG games) is inherent with these articles, as well as multi part strategy guides etc. A good reason for people to look out for the following issue.

Send it again. I don't use a spam filter on that account.

You can also just copy and paste it into a private message here on this site, if you want to.

We are a little more than ten days past the previously posted preferred submission deadline, with numerous submissions committed to having not yet arrived, we will aim for the November 23rd publication target, instead of the October 31st publication target.

On a side note, if submissions-to-date are any indication, interest in advertising - even though it is free, for PBM games or for ancestral descendants of PBM games - is virtually non-existent. Regardless, we will publish the issue without ads, if that proves to be the case.

One tidbit that I found to be interesting is that, only the actual October 15th preferred submission deadline, one envelope arrived in my physical postal mailbox from Sweden. Yet, numerous submissions expected to come via electronic mail (e-mail) are proving to be slower to arrive than using the old fashioned postal service.

The ironies in life are great and many, eh?

OK, I'm on it! Prompt the people that promised you via e-mail rather than just on the board!

Happy hunting!

How are the submissions coming along?

#2642

Not that well, actually.

Since I chose two possible dates for publication of issue # 1, and very little was submitted by the first deadline, which was October 15th.

So, the publication date is now set at November 23rd, as initially announced in the first page of this thread.

Deadline is in one week - seven full days from today, which is November 20th.

People interested in submitting material for issue # 1 can send their stuff to myself or to Mark Wardell.

GrimFinger@GrimFinger.Net

Mark@wyeastgames.com

The sooner that you get it in, the better.

I will send a reminder via e-mail, when I return home from work, later today.

#2673

I submitted one essay just now, and a reprint of an old old article last night. Hopefully one or both will merit inclusion in the magazine. (Grim, see your PM inbox.) If not, let me know and I will just post them here on the forum for others to enjoy...

Well, it appears that issue # 1 might incur a small delay, after all. I have sent most of the stuff (but not all of it) to Mark, who is compiling it on his end.

I asked for a few last minute changes to the lettering on the cover art for the front cover, also.

The blame lies with me, and me alone.

Technically, the time zone cow could still be milked, since it is still November 23rd in certain parts of the world. But, it isn't, where I live. So, I shall have to content myself to eating crow, where missing that deadline is concerned.

I do not want to publish it, without a cover - even though many may end up hating the cover.

The bulk of the articles and ads, such as they were, are already in place in Mark's hands, and have been compiled, in fact, into a single document form.

Whatever delay there is, though, should be measurable in days, maybe just a day or two, in all probability, but certainly before the end of the month of November, which is only six days away, even at the outermost point.

My apologies. It's taking shape, though.

Anyone who did not submit anything can always submit something for issue # 2. In certain instances, I am still awaiting approval for requests to reprint articles that appeared in other magazines, previously. I'm just trying to publish a magazine, not incur any legal headaches. My additional apologies for any inconveniences caused by this approach.

I do not have to work on Monday (tomorrow), so maybe any final touches can be put on it then.

#2677

I feel that you should not be apologizing for something that you do for a hobby. We are looking forward to the issue yes, but a couple of days or a week of delay makes no difference.

#2686

Just an update, for any who might be interested.

Mark and I have been out of communication for the last couple of days, Thanksgiving and Black Friday. The only changes that were remaining to be made were relatively cosmetic. My apologies for the delay.

#2688

Another update regarding issue # 1.

I heard back from Mark Wardell, again, about an hour and a half ago. The last of the kinks are being sorted out, and barring anything unforeseen, issue # 1 should get published, today.
