You're gonna need a bigger shovel.

Do rest assured that over the last 5 years, our King's decree to build larger and better shovels has been honoured in full by his clay covered citizens. We invested most in mining, manufacturing and life support and this bore much (mud-covered, admittedly) fruit, for the King has his eye on the neighbouring worlds - and the plentiful supply of mud they contain. In anticipation, we have begun the construction of colonial mining and manufacturing units which we will ship to the unspoiled worlds to spoil them good and proper.

We have also embarked on a programme of (albeit slow) interstellar travel, with our first bottom-of-the-line sub-light transporter, which will imminently begin its inaugural flight to the nearest stars in the never-ending mission to muddy the galactic waters.

Wash me! Is it really five years since the last update?

These were a research-heavy half-decade: we've made great strides in life support, something that will more rapidly unlock our ability to colonise the nearest neighbours in the Mudballers home system. Also, our slowboat slowly moved a parsec away! We received a scan from the sector: entirely mud-free. We know there's another system several parsecs away, so we've asked it to keep on truckin'. 'Mud comes to those who wait', after all.

Also, we planned to build our first FTL ship but foolishly miscalculated (in our heads rather than on the spreadsheet we built for the purpose) the cost of research and ran out of capacity to complete it this turn. Next time!

We've also been receiving some odd message transmissions from a distant species: the Annelos. They appear to enjoy 'jumping' and refer to some great 'Brenda'. One hopes they have mud. Mud is awesome.

Five more years slip by as gracefully as a mudslide, and we finally have our first FTL ship! It is planned to head out to the 2nd nearest system. The slowboat we pointed at the nearest system is making good progress: another couple of turns and we can hopefully begin digging for victory!

Our stockpile of colonisation gear grows nicely, along with our research. We are almost at parity with our neighbouring world's LSN, so colonisation can begin imminently. Another FTL ship will be next, and will make 3 directions of exploration plus a home production capability turning out bucket after bucket of beautiful mud!

HOLD YOUR SHOVELS! MUD FOUND!

Our first FTL ship reported the presence of a new world within easy reach of colonisation and compatible with our ability to support life there. Let's see if we have enough carry capacity to send our stockpiles of IU and AU there and get digging up the first mud of a new world!

Mudtastic! A mere 5 years later and we have colonised our second planet! A second planet with a manufacturing and mining base adding to the production capacity of the Mudballers! We were so keen on looking at distant star systems for a new planet, we forgot about the much nearer home system planets. Same LSN, better mining diff! MUDMUDMUDMUDMUD.

Well! here is the muddy truth: LS production penalty can be severe! even with LS 13 on a world with LSN of 12, there is a 92% production penalty! invest in LS! And shovels. And mud. But definitely LS.

Oh, and we found a mudding WORMHOLE! We took precisely ZERO seconds to decide to jump in!

Oh, dirt-hugging days! We just heard that the wormhole team reported back after a successful crossing, and bearing news of a rich new system to take their shovels to!

We've also almost finished production on our first giant cargo ship, in preparation for our first extra-system colonies. In addition, our spreadsheet nerds also report that the LS production penalty for colony 1 has dropped to 85% following the sterling increases in research performed by the whitecoats.

The planetary defence team have also announced huge success with their project to defend the homeworld with the following press release:

"Bring it, alien bitches. Mud King out."
