RE: The Tribes of Crane - Fallen Empires - 07-19-2013

I played Tribes for Crane for many years and even was the GM for a while. It died a death in the UK when turn round got too long. It was a great game.

The game has been rewritten and resurrected as a Play by Email with a number of changes and improvements and renamed Fallen Empires.

It has been run for a year as a trial and been re-started earlier this year with a few minor changes and improvements.

It is possible to run a tribe and/or settlement. Political figures to run cities and Mercenary and Sea borne companies are being added later this year.

We are ready for new players to join us in the UK or overseas. Just email fallenemp.gmail.com

The artwork on the facebook page is very good.

I wonder who is the artist.

RE: The Tribes of Crane - ixnay - 07-19-2013

I remember reading this long treatise in The Dragon magazine, which was my first exposure to the very concept of commercial PBM gaming. It was called "The Fatal Flaws of Crane", and went into great detail. It was clearly written by someone who absolutely loved the concept and wanted very much for it to work, but was disappointed by certain game mechanics -- particularly the overall incentive for players to never have combat.

That article prompted me to take another look at these mysterious little game ads that appeared occasionally in The Dragon.

If Crane is really and truly up and running somewhere, I might just have to take part, even if it is still "flawed".

We are certainly up and running with a new game with the feel of Tribes of Crane and much better turn round. We encourage battles and there are lots of non player baddies to make sure that these happen, pirates, bandits, trolls, merfolk, goblins, necromancer etc. Battles between players should occur as more players join

RE: The Tribes of Crane - Greybeard - 07-20-2013

I was in Tribes of Crane for a while, and hope to be able to find out more, even though I am not on Facebook. The discouragement of combat seems to me to be an excellent recommendation, as this is what it is like in real life too!

Having never played Tribes of Crane did the Dragon article say it was more of a rpg that encouraged more thought out combat as in it had high risks failure rather then wargame with lots of fighting between tribes or anything that looked at you funny?

If it is not to much to ask, it possible to read a scanned copy of the article?

Thanks

I used to love Tribes of Crane, will have to take a look at Fallen Empires.
I think I used to run 2 tribes and had some kind of political position controlling a city for the Dark Union if I remember right. Somewhere in the loft will be a folder with all my old turns in.
